Last week was Evie's week. We had lots of birthday celebrating to do for our 6-year-old girl, and she loved every minute of it. The planning, shopping, cleaning and baking were a lot of work, but it was so worth it to see Evie glowing in the love of her family and friends. One of my favorite moments was seeing Evie get on the bus on her birthday morning and hearing all the kids singing "Happy Birthday" to her. We also brought popsicles in to share with her class, and Noah sat like a perfect little angel eating a popsicle with the kindergartners and listening to a story. (Is this the same kid whose behavior had me in tears two weeks ago?!) We had a fun family party that evening, complete with bike riding with cousins until it got dark out, and then we transformed the basement into a spa for Evie's spa party with her friends on Saturday.

I was feeling wistful on Evie's birthday, reflecting on how proud I am to be her mom, how vividly I can still remember the day she was born, and how quickly six years have passed. It feels like time is slipping through my fingers and I want to hang on a little tighter and soak it in. Evie has had an awesome year and has flourished in kindergarten, and she has also grown up so much. She is tall and lanky and when she crawls on my lap now, she is a big pile of legs and arms. She is independent and strong-willed, yet she still wants me by her side in new situations. She is riding her bike all over the neighborhood, and wants to go farther and farther by herself. She is reading chapter books, and one of our favorite times of day is reading a few chapters together before bed. She loves to get her hands dirty creating things in the kitchen, outside, and with arts and crafts, but she also loves to be fancy in her dresses and especially loves wearing fancy shoes right now. This girl has captured our hearts, and we can't wait to see what age 6 brings!
Mother's Day was awesome, and a much-needed break after a busy week of celebrating Evie's 6th birthday. Church, brunch at Chef's Corner, a nice afternoon nap (for me!), and dinner with my family rounded out the day. I didn't wash a dish, change a stinky diaper, or deal with any bad kid behavior that I didn't feel like dealing with. What a treat! Evie made some really cute gifts for me at school, and she was so proud to give them to me. Of course, these are the things that make me cry and wish I could bottle up that tenderness and generosity forever! And Noah saying "Happy Mudder's Day, Mama!" just melted my heart.
